I am a gadget guy. I like technology and all the little toys I get to have with the excuse that they are for work, or better yet, ministry. With that said, there was a terrible incident in the Joye household today. I took my Motorola Q Smartphone off of the charger like any normal morning and turned it on. When I came back a few minutes later, it was still on the boot up screen. After many attempts of turning it off and on and taking the battery out, it never made it past this screen. My day then led me to Verizon, where I was told that they can't work on the Q. When I got to church, I called the number they gave me, and I was told that they would send me a new Q. That was good news except for the fact that I leave for Youth Specialties in Charlotte tomorrow and the phone will be here a day after I leave.
While I really do try to not be a slave to my cell phone, it was surprising how frustrated I got due to the fact that I would not have it while I was away. Yet not too long ago that wouldn't be such a big deal. Yeah, we have a guest band leading worship at church and I won't be very reachable in case something goes wrong, but why would they need me anyway? The band will be great and we have an awesome team of people who don't miss a beat when I am not there. So maybe I can actually enjoy the break from the phone. I know my wife, who gets to go with me, will. And I will have a brand new toy when I get home.
